Day 2: Exploring Holy Island

Today, we had to get up early as our big day was ahead of us - our trip to Holy Island! We all rushed about excitedly, for the trip was going to be a long one ( as we later found out!! ). Our coach was able to make its way safely along the causeway onto the island as the tide was out. We began our day on Lindisfarne by visiting St. Mary's Church where we saw a beautiful, wooden sculpture of monks carrying St. Cuthbert's body to his place of rest. Also in the church we saw the coracle (one man boat) used by Cuthbert when he wanted to visit his tiny isle to meditate.
After lunch, overlooking the harbour, we sat peacefully enjoying a few moments of watching calm, gently rippling waves, swooping black-headed gulls, abandoned fishing boats and a glorious blue sky above.
To burn off our scrumptious sandwiches we headed towards the castle, looked briefly at the lime kilns and then began a ramble over sand dunes, stumbling through the long waist- high grass, wading through the soggy marsh until finally we found a quiet, secluded beach where we all enjoyed finding, crabs, shells and a variety of other beach treasures.
Leaving the beach was a struggle!!!
Few children noticed the sign... and ended up covered in piri piri burrs- small spiked thistle like flowers (but more like weeds)!
Overall, a great but extremely tiring day was had by all including the staff!!
